What’s Going On Over There?!? Strategies to Prevent Peer-to-Peer Abuse

03/08/2022 11:30 AM

How many times have your staff looked over at a group of campers and wondered “what is going on over there?” Probably more than once. And finding the answer to that question—as well as knowing what to do about it—is a critical component of camp safety. Bullying, hazing, and physical or sexual abuse between campers has long-lasting effects for all campers involved. And it is not tolerated by parents or the society at large. Yet in the past 5 years, there has been a significant increase in both the frequency (how often) and severity (financial and emotional damages) of such incidents.

Katie Johnson, Senior Consultant, The Redwoods Group

Katie Johnson has spent 20+ years as youth development professional working with both resident & day camp programs, including 8 years with the American Camp Association. Katie joined The Redwoods Group in 2016 as a Risk Consultant  where she is sharing her professional experiences to help camps and youth serving organizations provide safe environments and programs for children and families.

Balancing Risk & Reality: Camps on Campus and Other Non-Traditional Spaces

03/08/2022 1:30 PM
What is(n’t) a camp? As out-of-school-time experiences for youth diversify, policies and procedures struggle to catch up. Youth participants want and need opportunities to explore and try new things, and camp professionals need to protect their organization and themselves from risk. Join researchers & practitioners from Clemson’s Pre-Collegiate Programs Office to discuss how to balance risk and reality in settings beyond “a cabin in the woods.”

Greg Linke, Clemson University

Greg is the Director of the Pre-collegiate Programs Office at Clemson University. In this role, his office identifies and manages the risks associated with the care and supervision of non-student minors who participate in programs and activities affiliated with the University. They advise program directors on best practices in order to minimize risk and maintain a healthy, safe environment for participants.

Katie Thurson

Katie (she/her) is a Ph.D. student at Clemson University, studying data science & diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in youth programs. She works with the Pre-Collegiate Programs Office as a graduate assistant and volunteers with ACA at the regional and national levels.
